The supertype-subtype relationship is modelled as an ordinary
association (see the TMDM for the PSIs [1]). The instanceOf element is
just a shortcut for a "type-instance" association (c.f. the
description where <instanceOf/> creates an association). You can, if
you want, express the "type-instance" relationship with associations.
You don't have to use the instanceOf-shortcut.
