a side note that might be of value:

What distinguishes Topic Maps (and RDF) from all other data models in  
use today is that they allow merging together any instances of the  
model without considering any of the semantics they represent.

That is a huge leap forward compared to relation models or XML;  
especially in our integration focussed world.
