This will depend on what Topic Maps implementation you use. Most Java  
engines will support TMAPI, and so you can use the TMAPI methods,  
which includes indexes for looking up information.

A more convenient approach is to use a query language. Two of the  
main Java engines (TM4J and OKS) support the tolog query language.
