PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 18, 2005
**************************************************************
This workshop will focus on Semantic Web-based knowledge representation=20
and engineering approaches and methods for the needs of intelligent=20
learning systems and will discuss issues related to their use for =
content=20
and knowledge components specification, effective intelligent courseware =
construction and modelling the learner.
SWEL'05 is the third in a series (http://www.win.tue.nl/SW-EL/)
following the successful SW-EL'04, held in three sessions in=20
conjunction with AH 2004, The Netherland, ITS 2004, Brazil, and ISWC=20
2004, Japan, and the Workshop on Concepts and Ontologies in Web-based=20
Educational Systems, held in conjunction with ICCE'2002 in Auckland,=20
New Zealand.
**************************************************************
Workshop goals
**************************************************************
* To discuss the current state-of-the-art in using Semantic Web=20
technologies and standards in intelligent educational systems.=20
* To attract the interest of the related research communities to=20
the problems in intelligent educational systems and serve as an=20
international platform for knowledge exchange and cooperation=20
between researchers. =20
To answer the open questions posed by this workshop, we aim at=20
bringing together researchers from Computer Science, Education,=20
Information Systems, Communication studies, Sociology, AI, and HCI=20
to share their experience.
**************************************************************
Important Dates
**************************************************************
Paper submission: April 18, 2005=20
Notification: May 9, 2005
Camera-ready submission: May 20, 2005
**************************************************************
Workshop topics
**************************************************************
Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:
* Using ontologies and/or Semantic Web technologies for:=20
-- knowledge representation in intelligent educational systems=20
-- modularised and standardized architectures (e.g. separation=20
of domain models and application models)=20
-- achieving interoperability between intelligent learning=20
applications, sharable user models and knowledge components=20
-- supporting authoring of intelligent educational systems=20
* Semantic Web technologies for Adaptive Learning Systems=20
-- Personalization and adaptation in educational systems=20
-- Ontology-based reasoning for personalising the educational=20
Semantic Web=20
-- Techniques and methods to capture and employ learner=20
semantics=20
* Semantic Web technologies for Educational Information Systems=20
-- SW-based indexing/annotation of educational content (incl.=20
individual and community based)=20
-- Ontology-based information browsing and retrieval=20
-- Semantic Web/ontology based recommender systems=20
* SW-based Methods, Techniques, and Tools for:=20
-- Building and sharing educational content, models of users,=20
and personalisation components.=20
-- Services in the context of intelligent educational systems=20
(i.e. authoring service, user modelling service, etc.)=20
-- Ontology evolution, versioning and consistency=20
* Empirical research for Intelligent Educational Systems:=20
-- Real-world systems and case studies=20
-- Community and individual support with Semantic Web=20
technologies and Ontologies=20
The topics can be approached from different perspectives:=20
theoretical, systems engineering, application, case study and=20
system evaluation, etc.=20
All contributions are required to state explicitly in the=20
abstract which topic they are addressing.
**************************************************************
Workshop Format
**************************************************************
The workshop will consist of the following:=20
* Paper presentations sessions:=20
-- General session on Semantic Web and e-Learning=20
-- Special session on Semantic Web-based Educational=20
Information Systems=20
-- Special session on Adaptive Learning Environments
* Demos & Posters session=20
* Joint Panel discussion (the workshop organizers will invite=20
panelists who will present key questions and their positions=20
on them).=20
**************************************************************
Submission
**************************************************************
High quality research papers are encouraged, including position=20
papers and work in progress, in order to present the current=20
state of the art on various perspectives of intelligent=20
educational systems within the context of educational Semantic=20
Web. They will serve as an input for a scientific discussion to=20
identify main problems and to set the basis for novel solutions.=20
Participation of young researchers is encouraged.
The participants can submit full papers up to 10 pages and=20
short and position papers and posters 4 pages long. Paper should=20
be formatted according to the IOS Press requirements=20
(http://www.iospress.nl/navfr/authcofr.html).=20
=20
The most important requirements are:=20
* Fonts - 12 point Times New Roman=20
* Page format - A4=20
* Printed area - 15.6 cm wide and 25.2 cm long=20
* MS Word (.doc), Portable Document Format (.pdf), or Rich=20
Text Format (.rtf).=20
* Details in the authors guidelines for the main conference
(http://hcs.science.uva.nl/AIED2005/submission.html)=20
Submit your papers in electronic form to both workshop=20
co-chairs at dichevad@wssu.edu and l.m.aroyo@tue.nl.=20
Include SW-EL@AIED'05 in the subject line.
Specify the prefered workshop session.
**************************************************************
Workshop proceedings
**************************************************************
The accepted papers will be included in the workshop proceedings=20
and will be made available online on the workshop web site=20
(http://www.win.tue.nl/SW-EL/). Possibilities will be=20
investigated to publish the best workshop papers in a special=20
issue of a refereed journal (e.g. IJCEELL, ET&S, etc).
