| Is it not sufficient to say that unless the application is fully
| compliant with the "Topic Map" specification (or at least come very
| close and aim for closer) then it is not a topic map application?

The current standard just specifies a syntax, which makes that kind of
difficult. There's lots of topic map applications that don't ever use
the syntax. However, if we were to apply that criterion TME would
clearly fail, since it's got neither XTM import nor export. And that
does make it sort of odd to call it "Topic Map Explorer".

| Given that, is it fair to use the name "Topic Map Explorer" for now?

Well, I think a lot of the heat in this debate came from the choice of
that particular name. If the name hadn't had so much that ring of this
being the definitive topic map application I'm not sure Tom would have
posted the way he did.

Also, I think that for a personal information manager "Topic Map
Explorer" is not really a good name. What's needed is something short
and snappy that doesn't have "topic maps" in it.
