| This may seem a really silly question, but I'm struggling to
| understand the difference between scoping a <baseName>, and using a
| <variant> of a <baseName> in XTM. When would you use one, rather
| than the other?

I think it's a perfectly reasonable question, actually. You're not the
first to wonder. :)

In XTM it is implied that the variant names have a relationship to
their base name. They are, as Jan says, alternative forms (variants)
of the base form (the base name). So the base name might be

  MOCKBA

with variants

    Moskva / latin-script
****** / IPA characters for pronunciation
****** / sound clip of pronunciation

etc etc

I hope this helps.
