Hi Lutz--

have you considered using non-topic map data sources and bulding a
TM-like wrapper around them? You'll propably find good data for your
testbed if you also look at relational databases (maybe from various
departmenst of your university?).

Then, once they look like Topic Map Objects, accessable via an API,
you can merge them. You do not neccessarily need to have the maps
as documents!
