I admit that I do not (fully) understand what you need to express, but
I would expect a simple[1]

   (is-stage-in-process)
   stage:   application-of-recognition-criteria
   process: recognition

doing the trick.

Right. But you can do the following:

   (contains)
   container: process
   containee: stage

   (subclasses)
   subclass:   is-stage-in-process
   superclass: contains

If that is what you want to say.
