So what does it boil down to, this debate?

I think it's two questions:

Q1: Are there significant advantages to be had from being able to 
reify the aggregate of metadata (characteristic) 
assignments/assertions about a subject as TMs do?

A1: Yes.

Q2: Should all assignments have a place for assigning a DUID if 
necessary?

A2: Yes.

If one doesn't have these things, assignments can't be scoped or 
spoken about. 

That's pretty much it.
So instead of TimBL's triples, you might be looking at a DB table 
with five fields instead.
TM [assertionID, topicID, scopingTopicRefs, roleProperty, rolePlayer]

Big deal...?
