I'd like to add one thought to this discussion:

In my opinion, the topic maps that are/will be used in real projects will simply
be too big for an XSLT processor to handle, as they still require the construction of
a DOM tree [1].

[1] I read somewhere that there are beginning developments of SAX-like XSLT processors,
    but I can't recall where that was.
