Thank you very much for all of your interesting ideas.

Now some further questions:

If I choose to model the synonyms the way Jean suggests (each synonym as a 
topic linked to the descriptor with an association like "usage"), isn't 
there the danger that this will blow up my topic map too much?
Especially considering the point of navigating the map.

In connection with the last point I have the question if you can recommend 
any free topic map engine where I can test the different effects caused by 
different modelling strategies. I know that many of you work for different 
companies and I don't want to cause any irritation in this mailing list.
But I hope you can give me some positive answer.

Currently I use the evaluation version of ontopias omnigator VI, but I am 
not quite satisfied with the way of visualizing the topic map (I think of a 
more graphical way, e.g. a hyperbolic view or something that way). I also 
tried "topic map designer" programmed by a german student (but this tool is 
based on ISO13250 and also not very stable on my sytem) and k42 of empolis.
