[topicmapmail] modelling synonyms

Hello,
I agree with Michel and Lars recommandations but it may be a little trickier
:
If you need the topic map to be used as a metadata repository where topic
basename may be used as metadata in document, you then have to choose wich
synonym should be used as metadata for documents, then a scope mechanism may
be usefull to designate which basename to use as metadata and which ones are
synonyms used for resarch purposes.
In an multilangual thesaurus we finally choose to create seperate topics for
the synonyms, related with an association to the "concept" topic.
The "concept" topic had several basenames, but only for each language. Scope
is used to manage language filtering.
The synonyms were separate topics related with an association. For ergonomy
purpose we had to give for each synonym several names as we wanted to have
various way the users may spell the same word espacially because of
mispelling or various forms of the same word (organisation, organization,
organisations...).
We then came back to the problem of wich base name to choose as metadata as
we had one for each language on the "concept". The short term decision was
to use a scope to designate the basename to use as metadata (in our case
english) and to encourage the client to use PSI instead of basename as
document metadata.
I hope it helps, or maybe I confuse you, then forget this and follow Michel
advice.
Sincerely
Jean Delahousse
