Hi Dan,
It's hard to know what "as a beginner" means.  I'll leave it to others to 
point to available topic map engines, some of which are available for free 
download for demonstration purposes.  Here, I'll mention Kal Ahmed's open 
source Java XTM engine you can find at http://tm4j.sourceforge.net/
