DTDs and Schemas in a way that does not require you to reorganize your
data,
or rename the logical units you are currently working with. Its possible,
but difficult to do. Neither RDF, OIL or XTM help solve this problem, but
there are techniques around based on AFs that can if we are very careful.

Martin,
I've never been a fan of AF - in fact I've always viewed them as flawed.
My way forward would be based on attributes defining UID's, and then
using application extensions to do the business semantic equating.
I'd love to find a way to use Schema and the parser to deliver this - but
I suspect the only real way is server side - via things like Javaservlets,
that interact with the parser via XPointer and similar.
Just my 2cents worth.
