I agree that this is a big danger - especially when they think they can drop
the "unimportant extras", such as datatypes and abstract type substitution
groups. My thinking is based on an assumption that one of the big players
(e.g. MS) will introduce a fully featured schema based parser in the next
couple of months, and that alll the others will be forced to play catch-up
by the end of the year. Once we have that, and a killer application for
abstract classes (e.g. ebXML) then there will be no reason why other key
applications cannot follow suit. I have used Topic Maps as an example of
another significant future use for this facility.
