Russ Young has been a developer at Folio for over 5 years, and is currently the Director of Development. He has helped develop Folio Views 3.0 for DOS, Folio Views 3.1, the SGML Toolkit, and Fusion. For Folio 4, Russ designed and built the Folio Workbench as well as managed the Tools Development team which made the Folio Builder product. As the SGML evangelist at Folio, he is an active participant in the SGML community, and serves on the SGML Open technical committees, the GCA IT Division, and the W3C XML working group. Russ graduated magna cum laude from BYU in 1992 with a BS in Computer Science, and will graduate this December from BYU with his MS in CS. Russ and his wife Chris have 2 children, Chantel and Sawyer, and are expecting a third in July.

Abstract

Technological changes are happening at an ever increasing pace, and continue to disrupt the business models that we have become accustomed to in the SGML marketplace. We will examine some of the technological changes that have occurred over the past few years and their impact on our market. We will also look at how the SGML market has influenced some of the technological changes that are happening today. Some of the questions we will address are:

How has the advent of the web influenced SGML?

What will the role of SGML become with the introduction of XML?

Will SGML have an active role in the internet or remain in the back office?

How can internet commerce give me a return on my SGML investment?
