Dr. ir. Frank Pieper (Breda, 1957) received a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 1979. He worked for Burroughs Computers for two years before starting to study Computing Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology, from which he graduated in 1985. Areas of specialization were mathematical logic and databases. He received a Ph.D. from the same university in 1989. The dissertation was entitled "Data Machines and Interfaces". It dealt with the semantic aspects of functional specifications of information systems, on a mathematical basis.

After having gained some years of managerial and consultancy experience, he joined MediaWare in 1993. This Eindhoven-based company is a consultancy and service provider in the field of publishing process management, with database publishing being its core technology.
