Matthias Kraft, born 1963 in Germany, studied law at the university of Munich. Early he recognized his passion to combine computer methods and the methods of legal analysis. He developed the first authoring system for legal CBT at the institute of EDP and law in Munich. After the first examination he changed to the university of Augsburg, Germany. He developed a program to model legal deduction methods and display them in a tree-like view.
Another change took place after the bar exam. At the university of Saarbrücken for three years Matthias Kraft became assistant at the institute of EDP and law of Prof. Maximilian Herberger. During this stay he created several windows based hypertext systems for German law. This confronted him with structured text of database systems like STAIRS (IBM) and GOLEM (Siemens). Since the transformation to a modern hypertext system was very hard, he soon discovered the needs of a more powerful system like SGML. His graduation as a doctor of law will be made in early 1997 on data interfaces of legal applications.
At this time Matthias Kraft works with C. H. Beck as a project manager. He supports the introduction of SGML into the company as the installation of the information depositories. He also manages several CD-ROM products.
