Dr. Goldfarb is the inventor of SGML and HyTime, and technical leader of the teams that developed them into their present form as International Standards. He is a consultant to implementors of large-scale and innovative SGML applications, and developers of leading-edge SGML and HyTime products.
During a 27-year career at IBM Dr. Goldfarb contributed to a number of office and publishing products -- including the Document Composition Facility and the SGML Translator -- and was the leader of the research project that in 1969 invented the Generalized Markup Language (GML) on which SGML is based. He also played a leading role in the design and implementation of IBM's multi-site multi-national GML-based publishing system (now converting to SGML), with which more than 11 million master pages have been produced.
Other technical accomplishments include the design and programming of the ARCSGML parser which, with its proprietary and non-commercial derivatives (notably SGMLS), has achieved world-wide use. He has also served as a market planner, developing market research and business justification methodologies for information systems.
Recognition of his contributions to publishing and information processing includes the first International SGML Award of the Graphic Communications Association, the Gutenberg Award of the Printing Industries of America, and a permanent appointment as Honorary Technical Consultant to the international SGML Users' Group.
For over a decade, Dr. Goldfarb's keynote speeches have been a high point of SGML conferences, and his technical papers have been published throughout the world. He has been profiled in several publications, including Forbes Magazine -- the only IBMer not a CEO or CFO ever to achieve that distinction. His book, "The SGML Handbook" (Oxford University Press, 1990), was praised by "The Seybold Report on Publishing" as the definitive reference on SGML. He is editor of Prentice-Hall's "Charles F. Goldfarb Series on Open Information Management", and of the forthcoming "SGML Buyer's Guide".
Dr. Goldfarb is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Columbia College and is a member of the California Bar.
